About This Recipe
If you have been here for a bit, then you know my love for Greek food! There’s just nothing better than the fresh and delicious flavors of the Greek culture! These Air Fryer Turkey Burgers are no exception!
This healthy turkey burger recipe requires only 20 minutes of prep and just 10 minutes of cook time. Perfect for a busy weeknight dinner! And they also work amazing for meal prep!
I also love how many great options there are for eating these juicy turkey burgers. You can’t go wrong with traditional burgers of course. But you can also throw these burger patties on a pita, wrap, or lettuce wrap or bed of crisp lettuce for a low carb option.
Or serve up with some sides! We love serving these Greek turkey burgers with some Mediterranean orzo pasta salad, tomato cucumber salad or sweet potato fries! And definitely don’t forget the Tzatziki!
Why You’ll Love These Air Fryer Turkey Burgers
- Juicy turkey burgers with a delicious mediterranean twist!
- You can make these in the air fryer, on the grill or stovetop
- A lean, protein-packed entree
- Ready in just 30 minutes!
- Made with simple ingredients easy to find at any grocery store.
- Perfect for easy weeknight dinner or weekly meal prep
- Great eaten on a bun, pita, lettuce wrap or over a bed of lettuce for a low carb option!
- Olive oil – or avocado oil or butter
- Garlic – A fresh garlic clove (or frozen cube) ideally but you can also use garlic powder if that’s what you have on hand.
- Onion – I used red onion here.
- Ground turkey – I used 93/7 lean ground turkey but you can also use a higher fat turkey. Don’t use 99% fat free turkey for this recipe. You could also sub for ground beef if you rather.
- Feta cheese – I’ve found any type of feta works good for this recipe – regular, reduced-fat or fat free. Crumble your own from a block of feta or get the already crumbled kind.
- Breadcrumbs – Not necessary but helps with binding. I used Italian breadcrumbs. Use gluten-free if needed.
- Dill – I highly recommend using fresh chopped dill here! I don’t think you need fresh herbs for every recipe but I do recommend it for this one. It really brings a lot of flavor to these burgers!
- Lemon juice
- Ground cumin
how to make
The full printable recipe is below, but let me walk you through the process so you know what to expect when you’re making it!
1. Heat olive oil over medium heat. When shiny, add the garlic and onion and saute for 2-3 minutes until tender.
2. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly while you gather everything else.
3. In a large bowl, add the ground turkey, feta cheese, breadcrumbs, chopped dill, lemon juice, cumin, salt and pepper.
4. Mix the ingredients together with your hands until well combined (be careful not to overwork the meat).
5. Divide mixture into five even parts then shape into 1/4 – 1/2-inch patties with your hands. Press your thumb into the middle part of the burger to create a divot (so it doesn’t puff up in the middle when it cooks).
You can cook the burgers in any way you please. In the air fryer, on the stovetop or on the grill.
How To Cook Turkey Burgers in the Air Fryer
- Preheat the air fryer to 375F.
- Spray the basket with cooking spray.
- Place patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket (in batches if necessary) and air fry for 10-11 minutes, flipping halfway, or until internal temperature is 165F.
Stovetop Method:
- Grease skillet and set to medium heat.
- When hot, add the burgers and cook for 4-5 minutes.
- Then flip and cook for 3-4 minutes or until burgers are cooked through.
Grill Method:
- Grease grill grates to prevent sticking.
- Set the grill to medium heat and cook burgers for 4-5 minutes on each side or until cooked through.
- Serve on a bun (or lettuce wrap for lower carb) with red onions, tomato, lettuce and tzatziki.
To Freeze: Individually wrap cooked or uncooked burgers with plastic wrap and store them in an airtight freezer-safe storage container for up to 3 months.
To Reheat: Let the frozen burgers thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating or cooking.
How long to cook turkey burgers in air fryer?
Getting the burgers cooked to the right temperature is the most important part (and honestly the most challenging part) of cooking burgers. We don’t want to overcook the burgers or they’ll be dry, but since these are turkey burgers (and not beef) we need to ensure they’ve cooked through.
An instant read thermometer is the best way to check the internal temperature to prevent overcooking. It should read about 165ºF (74ºC). If you don’t have a meat thermometer, cut through the middle and ensure it’s no longer pink.
Do turkey burgers need a binder?
While turkey burgers don’t need a binder, binders can help create more stable burgers. We’re using breadcrumbs as the binder for this recipe (just 1/4 cup so not a whole lot). But if you wanted to omit the breadcrumbs you can.
In this case I would recommend shredding your onion with a box grater (instead of dicing) so the onion mixes in easier with the beef, creating more stable patties. Refrigerating the patties before cooking helps them stay together too.
How do I store the leftover air fryer turkey patties?
Refrigerate burgers in an airtight container up to 5 days. To freeze, individually wrap cooked or uncooked burgers with plastic wrap and store them in an airtight freezer-safe storage container for up to 3 months. Let the frozen burgers thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating or cooking.
How do I reheat these homemade turkey burgers?
Gently reheat juicy turkey burger in a nonstick skillet on the stovetop over medium-low heat for a couple of minutes. I also like to splash a bit of water into the skillet and then cover it to help the burgers steam. You can also reheat in the air fryer at 350F for 3-5 minutes or until warmed through.
What should I pair juicy air fryer turkey burgers with?
We love pairing these easy burgers with a side salad, tomato cucumber salad, mediterranean orzo pasta salad, green beans, sweet potato wedges, or roasted potatoes.
