About This Recipe
Just like these Frozen Oreo Cups and Peanut Butter Cornflake Bars, I LOVE making freezer desserts! They are perfect when you need to curve your afternoon sweet tooth because they stay fresh in the freezer and are easy to grab at a moments notice!
This classic recipe seriously couldn’t be easier. It only requires 4 ingredients (that you might already have on hand) and can be prepped in just 15 minutes. The best part about this recipe is that these frozen bites last for up to 3 months in the freezer when stored in an airtight container or freezer-safe bag.
This recipe is the perfect combination of sweet and salty and one you can feel good about enjoying!
Plus, it’s packed with healthy fats (thanks to the peanut butter and coconut oil) and has great complex carbs (and potassium!) from the bananas for the best healthy dessert recipe. The perfect bite any time of day!
I also love sprinkling a little sea salt on top to really take the sweet and salty combo to the next level!

How To Make
The full printable recipe is below, but let me walk you through the process so you know what to expect when you’re making it!
1. Peel and slice your banana into 1/4-1/2 inch slices (I had about 32 slices total).
2. Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper. Add the banana slices and spread about 1/2 tsp peanut butter on half of them, then top with the other half of the banana slice. Freeze for an hour.
3. Once they’re frozen, melt the chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave in 30 seconds intervals, stirring in between until melted.
4. Remove the bites from the freezer and dip the bites in the chocolate so half of each bite is coated, then place back on the baking sheet. **Work quickly doing this because the longer the banana bites are out the sticker they’ll get (or work in batches keeping half in the freezer). Place back in the freezer to harden then store in a freezer safe bag!
Store these banana peanut butter bites in a freezer safe bag in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Helpful Tips
- It can be helpful to work in batches while dipping the frozen banana bites in chocolate. The longer the banana bites sit at room temperature, the sticker they will get so I like to keep half in the freezer while I dip the first batch. Then I add those to the freezer and work on the second half to try to keep them as frozen as possible!
- Choose a banana that’s ripe but still firm. If it’s not ripe enough, it will be tasteless. If you use overripe bananas, it will be difficult to work with and will get mushy.
- Coconut oil helps make the chocolate melt and easier to work with. Use unrefined coconut oil to avoid the coconut taste.
- If the chocolate starts to harden and it becomes more difficult to coat the sandwiches, re-melt it in the microwave for a few seconds.
- Don’t slice your banana too thin! You want even, thick rounds (1/4-1/2 inch slices) for your banana slices so that it will hold the peanut butter steadily.
Will the bananas turn brown after making these frozen peanut butter banana bites?
The bananas should not turn brown as long as you keep the bites in the freezer. By freezing these bites, it stops the ripen process so your frozen bananas should stay at the same level of ripeness as when made.
What type of peanut butter should I use for this recipe?
You can use any kind of nut butter for these chocolate covered banana bites. I have used several different brands but I always try to use a natural peanut butter that is only two ingredients (peanuts and salt). You can use creamy or crunchy peanut butter depending on your preference or switch it up and use almond butter or cashew butter.
Do you need to take these bites out of the freezer for a couple of minutes before eating them?
Either way! You can enjoy these frozen chocolate banana bites directly from the freezer or let them thaw for a few minutes before enjoying. Completely up to you!
Can I melt the chocolate using a double boiler method instead of in the microwave?
You can also use a double boiler method to melt your chocolate if you prefer. Just place a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan and add chocolate chips. Turn heat on medium-low and stir chocolate until completely melted. This is a great way to try if you’re worried about burning the chocolate.
