About This Recipe
School is out for summer and I’m telling you, you need to make these easy Homemade Uncrustables! These little freezer-friendly treats are seriously the perfect solution for summer lunch time or easy school lunches. Sure, you can grab a box from the grocery store but let me tell you why it’s so much better to make your own homemade uncrustables at home.
For one, it’s WAY cheaper! We all know groceries are at an all-time high right now and I promise you will save so much money this way. Plus, you can pick the ingredients to make them with. I love making these with Dave’s Killer Bread (which is a healthier white bread) or whole wheat bread. I love using natural creamy peanut butter (where the only ingredients are salt and peanuts). You can use a reduced-sugar jelly or homemade strawberry jam if you have any on hand.
Not only is it easy to pick better ingredients but you can also switch up your filling. Get creative by adding honey, nutella, marshmallow fluff, apple butter, etc. You can even make them savory with adding deli meats like ham and cheese!
Making your own uncrustables only takes 15 minutes and you can store them in a freezer bag for up to 3 months. I love making a large batch so I know I have something quick and easy to pull out for breakfast, snack, or lunch on-the-go. Looking for more freezer-friendly ideas? Why You’ll Love These Homemade Uncrustables
- Super easy to make! Prepped and ready to freeze in just 15 minutes.
- The best budget-friendly alternative to your kid’s favorite snack.
- Both kids and adults will love these! Picky eater approved!
- Perfect for stashing in the freezer for a quick breakfast, easy lunches, snack or dessert.
- Can be adjusted for allergies as needed!
- Sandwich bread – any bread works! I used Dave’s White Done Right Thin-Sliced (healthier than white bread but not super whole grainy for those picky eaters). You can use high fiber or protein bread to increase the fiber and protein, or plain ole white bread if you prefer. Use your favorite and feel free to switch it up!
- Peanut butter – you can also use almond butter, cashew butter, or sunflower butter (if you have a nut allergy).
- Jelly – grape, strawberry, any! I used reduced sugar strawberry jelly.
- Peanut butter and honey.
- Peanut butter and Nutella. Make a dessert uncrustable by combing peanut butter and my homemade Nutella spread.
- Peanut butter and marshmallow fluff.
- Peanut butter and apple butter.
How To Make
The full printable recipe is below, but let me walk you through the process so you know what to expect when you’re making it!
1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (one that can fit in your freezer). Lay out the slices of bread.
2. Spread one tablespoon of peanut butter into a circle in the center of four of them (leaving about ½-inch all around from the crust). Spread one tablespoon of jelly into a circle in the center of the remaining four slices.
3. Put the sandwich together then use a sandwich cutter to press the edges and remove the outer crust.
4. Place the uncrustables back on the baking sheet and freeze for 2 hours or until frozen. Once frozen you can pack into individual sandwich bags or put them all into a gallon size bag.
To store: make sure to store in a freezer-safe bag to prevent freezer burn and to get all the air out. Stored this way these homemade uncrustables will stay fresh for 3 months!
To defrost, simply place in the fridge overnight or let sit at room temperature until defrosted.
Helpful Tips!
- Use a sandwich sealer to easily make the perfect crustless sandwich. I love prepping these in bulk to stash in the freezer and using this handy tool helps make this process much quicker!
- Don’t add too much jelly or it will burst through the top of the bread during the cutting and sealing steps.
- Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on both pieces of bread first to help the bread from getting soggy if using jelly.
- Use leftover extra bread to make homemade croutons (like in my Chicken Caesar Salad recipe) or use the scraps for my Pumpkin Chocolate Chip French Toast Bake.
Do I have to use a sandwich cutter for this recipe?
No you can make these homemade uncrustable sandwiches with a fork if you don’t have a uncrustable maker or sandwich cutter. To make with a fork, you can cut your bread into circles with a pizza cutter (before or after adding filling). Then use a fork to crimp the edges of the bread together, pressing hard, until they stick.
What is an uncrustable?
Smuckers uncrustables are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, without crusts, sold in the freezer aisle. These store-bought uncrustables have been a hit with kids (and adults) for years. They are great for your child’s lunch box or a quick snack on-the-go. I even love eating these uncrustables sandwiches for a quick snack and wanted to find a way to make them cheaper and with better ingredients. Plus, it’s so fun to make new combinations such as peanut butter and Nutella . Or try peanut butter and homemade apple butter.
Do I eat these uncrustable warm or cold?
I do not recommend heating up these uncrustables. I like to let mine thaw for around 30 minutes at room temperature. Or you can place them in the fridge the night before to defrost. Then you can enjoy cold from the fridge or room temperature if you let it sit out. Heating the uncrustable in them microwave might cause the sandwich to burst or jelly to become too hot that it tears bread.
