Why You’ll Love These Homemade Heavenly Hunks
- A healthier version of your favorite store-bought sweet treat.
- Tastes just like the real deal but made with wholesome ingredients.
- The perfect snack or quick dessert with no artificial additives.
- Way more cost-effective. A cheaper alternative to buying at the grocery store.
- A copycat version of the original recipe but add any mix-in to make your favorite flavor variation.
- Rolled oats
- Shredded coconut flakes
- Potato starch – potato starch acts as a binder here to help hold the oat bites together. You can use another starch, like arrowroot, tapioca flour or cornstarch in its place. Or you can omit, oat bites may just be a little more crumbly.
- Brown sugar
- Coconut oil
- Honey – you can also use maple syrup, agave nectar or brown rice syrup.
- Chocolate chips
- Add nut butter – Sub the honey for your favorite nut butter to add extra creaminess and flavor. Add 1/2 cup of almond butter, cashew butter or peanut butter.
- Different mix-ins – Sub the chocolate chips for sprinkles, white chocolate chips, dried cranberries or blueberries, butterscotch chips, chopped nuts, etc.
- Protein powder – sub some of the oat flour for your favorite protein powder to give these bites a protein boost.
- Make vegan – use vegan chocolate chips and sub honey for maple syrup or brown rice syrup.
How To Make
The full printable recipe is below, but let me walk you through the process so you know what to expect when you’re making it!
1. Add 1/3 of the oats, about 3/4 cup, to a food processor and grind into a fine flour.
2. Add the rest of the oats, plus the coconut, potato starch, brown sugar and salt. Pulse a little more to break the oats and coconut into smaller pieces. If your food processor is small, you may need to pulse in parts and transfer everything to a large mixing bowl.
3. Add coconut oil and honey to your pyrex (or microwave safe bowl) and microwave for about 30 seconds or until warm. Pour into the dry ingredients and mix to combine.
4. Then fold in the chocolate.
5. Transfer to a 8×8-inch dish lined with parchment paper and press down very firmly. You can spray a piece of parchment paper with cooking spray to help press the oat mixture down.
6. Freeze for at least an hour then take out and use a sharp knife to cut into 16 squares. Keep big or cut into fours to get small chunks like Heavenly hunks. Keep stored in a freezer safe bag in the freezer and enjoy!
You can store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. I prefer to store mine in the freezer. Stored in the freezer these bites will last up to 3 months. You can eat cold straight from the freezer, let thaw on the counter for a few minutes or pop the microwave for 8 seconds.
Can I use a different type of oats for this recipe?
You could sub for quick oats for old-fashioned oats, just know the texture will be different since both oats have totally different textures. I would not use steel cut oats for this recipe.
How do I use this recipe to make the different kinds of heavenly hunks?
This recipe is most similar to the original heavenly hunks but you can use it as the base recipe for a number of different flavors. Sub the honey for peanut butter or almond butter, add white chocolate chips, different types of chocolate chips, dried cranberries, sprinkles, cinnamon, etc.
Do I eat these oatmeal bites warm or cold?
I prefer to eat these chocolate chip oatmeal bites chilled (from the freezer) but you can also heat them up if you prefer. You can eat straight from the freezer, allow to come to room temperature for a few minutes on the counter, or heat in the microwave or air fryer.
How many bites does this recipe make?
This homemade recipes makes 16 (larger) bites or you can cut those in half or fours to make small chunks like the original heavenly hunks. The best part of making your own recipe is that you can decide what size you prefer these!
